Bright Insights: Chemistry Class Explores the Science of Light

In Mr. Pang’s 11th grade Chemistry class, students learned how to use a Bunsen burner, following specific safety procedures. On the day of the wavelength lab, the students burned lithium, sodium, copper, potassium, strontium, and calcium. The purpose was to see the colors of different metals in the flame. Different metals produce different colors when burned (this is how the type of metal is determined to use for fireworks to produce specific colors). To deepen their understanding of the experiment, students learned about electromagnetic waves, photons, and ground states. After the lab, the students had to calculate the frequency, wavelength, and energy produced from different colored lights.
