Q: How can a student attend IPoly High School?
A: In order to be considered to attend IPoly as freshmen, students must apply during their 8th grade year. Transfer students (10th-12th graders) may apply year-round. Please see Admissions Process and Information page for deadline information.
The selection process is based on the application (transcripts, letters of recommendation, evaluation of disciplinary and attendance history, etc). Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 academic GPA over the past two years. Once the student meets the initial minimum requirements, he or she will be invited to take our assessment test. The test will consist of a math exam, essay, and a group activity.
Transfer students will need to submit their high school transcripts for review by our counselor to determine transfer eligibility to IPoly prior to applying. If the student is eligible, he or she will complete an application, take the entrance exam, and participate in a brief interview as part of the admissions process.
Q: How does IPoly determine which students will get accepted, and which will go onto a waiting list?
A: Upon meeting minimum entrance requirements, students are invited to take an entrance exam.
Entrance exam test results will be mailed home within four weeks of testing. Students that pass the entrance exam will be entered into a lottery drawing. Lottery results will be mailed home.
Due to limited openings, once the first 136 students have been selected via lottery drawing, all spaces will be full for the incoming freshman class. Remaining student names will then be drawn to create a waiting list. Students placed on the waiting list will be contacted once there is an opening; the waiting list will be valid through the next school year.
Students that cannot get in in their freshman year due to space limitations will be notified, and may choose to reapply for tenth grade. The ranking on the waiting list will still be honored. In that case, students will need to submit a new application, but will not be required to take the entrance exam again.
Q: What types of students does IPoly look for?
A: When evaluating student applicants, we look at energy level, artistic and linguistic creativity, divergent thinking, and enthusiasm for discovery, and the ability to work with others.
Q: What skills will a student acquire at IPoly that they may not at another high school?
A: Students at IPoly are taught how to think and learn more effectively; they develop self-reliance, self-discipline and self-motivation; there is constant practice of presentation and public speaking skills through our project- and problem-based learning environment; students learn to work in teams as well as individually; students gain effective, practical use of concepts and technology.
Q: Does a student need to live within a particular area to attend IPoly?
A: IPoly is open to students from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. Over 40 cities are represented at IPoly.
Students that are accepted to IPoly must notify and check out of their current school before enrolling. For students beginning in the fall, this would be done at the end of the school year. Students that live outside of Los Angeles County will need to apply for an inter-district transfer permit through their school district before attending IPoly.
Q: What role do the teachers play at IPoly?
A: At IPoly, teachers are facilitators. They provide creative teaching approaches, offering student support systems and resources. Because of the smaller sized student population (approximately 550 total students), teachers are able to offer individualized attention not always made available at larger campuses.
Q: What curriculum is used at IPoly?
A: IPoly's curriculum is college prep, meeting the UC and CSU requirements. Students must meet these requirements in order to graduate.
The unique curriculum at IPoly is comprised of interdisciplinary coursework in math, science, social science and English/language arts as well as courses in foreign language, physical education, and a varied array of electives.
IPoly also utilizes project- and problem based learning methods. Each semester, students work together on a major project, which is then exhibited to the public.
Lastly, IPoly requires students to complete community service hours to meet graduation requirements.
Q: Is IPoly a magnet school?
A: IPoly High School is not a magnet school. IPoly's goal is to demonstrate that a meaningful and rigorous curriculum can be provided to all students. In doing so, we seek a broad range of students both academically and socially.
Q: How does IPoly rate in comparison to other high schools?
A: IPoly is ranked competitively in comparison to similar schools in the area. It has been named California Gold Ribbon School and California Dinguished School by the California Department of Education, as well as the recipient of the Golden Bell Award in the category of "Innovation in High Schools" by the California School Boards Association.
Q: Is IPoly WASC accredited?
A: Yes, IPoly is accredited by Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC).
According to Joseph Stits, Chairperson of the March 2006 WASC Accreditation Team: "Project-based learning is alive and well at IPoly and it is implemented in the broad context of the California content standards, delivered in a manner that engages and involves students in their own learning and assumption of responsibility for the quality and depth of that learning. The staff is in perpetual assessment of the effectiveness of the programs and use concrete data to drive change and improvement of the curriculum and their instructional methodology. Q: When did IPoly first open?
A: IPoly first opened its doors in September 1993 with the promise of new and innovative approaches to education that would empower all students to reach their highest potential.
Q: Does IPoly High School charge tuition to attend?
A: IPoly does not charge tuition. It is a tuition-free specialized public high school.
Q: Where is IPoly located? Where should visitors park?
A: IPoly is located at 3851 West Temple Avenue Pomona, CA 91768.
IPoly offers a small, safe school environment on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona, at the cross street of University Drive and West Temple Avenue.
Visitors should park in the Parking Lot K Annex, located at the cross street of University and Temple, in front of IPoly. Parking is $8 for the day and $4 for two hours. Passes can be purchased from one of the parking permit machines in the Lot K Annex. A few free 30-minute parking spaces may also be available. Please contact 909-839-2331 for more information.
Students and families are encouraged to attend a virtual orientation through Zoom to learn more about IPoly’s innovative program. While not required, these interactive sessions are highly recommended to understand the advantages of choosing IPoly.
The 2021-22 application will be released at IPoly's Virtual Open House on November 10, 2020 from 6:00-7:30pm.

The 2021-22 school year application is now available. The deadline to apply and participate in the lottery is March 19, 2021. After the lottery deadline, applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.
IPoly is open to students regardless of district of residence, and does not charge tuition. The admissions process includes completing an application, passing an entrance exam and being selected by lottery. There are 136 spaces available per grade level.
Students must submit an application in their 8th grade year to attend IPoly beginning in 9th grade. Students who are interested in transferring from another high school should submit a copy of their transcript to determine eligibility prior to submitting an application.
